The founding conference of the Chinese Society for Science and Technology, held on Christmas Day in 1907, plays a decisive role in the history of Chinese science.  Because as long as the participants at that time are still working in the scientific community, decades later, they will become the treasures of their respective scientific research institutes; after their death, obituaries will also inevitably include "a pioneer in a certain research field in our country"  and founder, one of the founders of China Society".

What is even more talked about is that whether it is the number of societies established overnight or the number of participants who were later elected as academicians of the first Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is a breathtaking number that can write a colorful chapter in the history of science.  Pen.  So much so that the reputation of this grand gathering of "one hundred gatherings jointly built" in the scientific world is comparable to the stories in the cultural field such as those who visited the thatched cottage three times, hairpin flowers in four phases, five sons were admitted to the imperial examinations, a poem was written in seven steps, and the Eight Immortals crossed the sea.

In 1987, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Society of Science and Technology, the magazine "Science China" specially organized a group of reporters to interview more than a dozen relevant scientists, and commemorated that grand event in the form of a special issue.  Among them, the article titled "Dare to tell Yunshan from now on" is an interview with Academician Wu Kuangshi, a pioneer and organizer of my country's chemical fiber industry engineering and one of the founders of the China Chemical Society.  Academician Wu was hailed as the "Father of Chemical Fibers" by the international academic community for his discovery of dozens of chemical fibers, including nylon, acrylic, and polyester. He was awarded the 1940 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and was one of the only remaining in-person attendees of that time.  , so his interview is the most eye-catching.  Here are some excerpts for the benefit of readers:

Eighty years ago today, forty-five scientific organizations, including the Society for Science and Technology of China, were simultaneously announced in London. This marked the beginning of the magnificent development of science and technology in China and laid a solid foundation for China's scientific prosperity today.  .  Over the past eighty years, the situation has been changing, and the land of China is changing with each passing day.  Because of this, we will miss the epoch-making scientific event 80 years ago even more.

On a sunny winter afternoon in Beijing, the "Science China" reporter and his party came to the residence of the Institute of Chemical Engineering and met with the highly respected academician Wu Kuangshi.  Although Mr. Wu is already 107 years old, he still speaks clearly and thinks quickly.  Under the guidance of his memories, everyone went back to those turbulent years.

Reporter: Mr. Wu, this year is the 80th anniversary of the founding of the China Society for Science and Technology.  In order to commemorate that grand meeting in London 80 years ago, we at Science in China are preparing to produce a special issue to pay tribute to the participants of that year.  We believe that as one of the parties involved, Mr. Wu, you have the most say, so we took the liberty to come here today and hope that Mr. Wu can give you some advice.

Mr. Wu: Haha, I am honored to be able to recall that time 80 years ago with you young people.

Reporter: Eighty years ago, in 1907 AD, the 33rd year of Guangxu's reign, Mr. Wu, you were studying in France at that time, right?

Mr. Wu: Well, not bad.  I was still a 24-year-old boy at that time, about the same age as you.  But you are already working, and I am still studying at the Ecole Centrale in Paris, France.  As you know, in the late Qing Dynasty, our country¡¯s education was very backward and could not be compared with today. People usually only go to primary school when they are around ten years old.  In this way, you will have to be in your twenties to go to college.

Reporter: The Ecole Centrale de Paris was founded in 1829 and is one of the well-known engineering schools in France.  At that time, China's education level was generally backward. The fact that Mr. Wu was able to study in such a school showed that you were talented and studied hard.

Mr. Wu: The key to my being able to attend such a university is not how smart or hardworking I am, but rather the fate that I have met.  My father Wu Zonglian, whose courtesy name was Yiqing and whose nickname was Jingzhou, was a supervisor in the Qing Dynasty.  In his early years, he studied at the Shanghai Canton Dialect Center and the Beijing Tongwen Center, learning French and Russian.  After graduation, he served as a translator and attach¨¦ in the embassy.  At the beginning of the 20th century, he served successively as secretary of the embassy in France, charge d'affaires of the embassy in Spain, and supervisor of students studying abroad in Britain, France, Italy, and Germany.  It is for this reason that I came to France to attend university after graduating from the Shanghai Cantonese Dialect Center.

Reporter: Even so, it was amazing to be able to go to university in France at that time.  It is said that before the establishment of the China Science and Technology Society, you and Yu Tongkui, Li Yinli, Li Jinghao, Li Lao and others wanted to organize a society?

Mr. Wu: Yes.  That summer, Brother Xitong (Li Jinghao), who was also studying chemistry in France, deeply realized the positive role of academic groups in promoting scientific development, so he approached a few of us to establish an organization specializing in chemistry.  At that time, transportation and communication were inconvenient, and there were few people studying in Europe. In addition, we young boys had no appeal at all. It was only through mutual introductions among classmates, fellow villagers and friends, and after half a year of hard work, we could barely make up the money.  A dozen people are preparing to establish the "European Branch of the Chinese Chemical Society" in Paris on Christmas Day.

    Reporter: What happened next?

?They are very sensitive to this kind of organization!  Besides, will such an organization that is too general become loose and lack cohesion because its content is too complex?  We feel a little unsure.

Reporter: Until you understand the various societies under the China Science and Technology Society?

Mr. Wu: Yes, it was only after I arrived in London to participate in the establishment of societies at all levels that my heart fell.

Reporter: You were initially responsible for the establishment of the Chinese Chemical Society, right?

Mr. Wu: Yes.  Initially there were seven people planning to establish the Chinese Chemical Society. When we arrived in London, apart from the two brothers Xingshu and Shoufeng who were responsible for the overall coordination of the Society of Science and Technology, Jinyong (Chen Chuanhu), Yajing (Lu An), Yunhua (Rongguang) and I  , Xitong (Li Jinghao) and five other people participated in the preparation of the Chemical Society.

Reporter: What about the Chemical Industry Society?

Mr. Wu: At that time, the distinction between chemistry and chemical engineering was not very clear. Whether it was basic theoretical research or industrial applications, they were generally classified into the category of chemistry.  China is very backward and all its chemical industry is imported from abroad.  When we first prepared the Chemical Society, we were actually going in the direction of chemical industry, such as alkali production, sugar production, salt production, etc., but the name was still called the Chemical Society.

Reporter: Like the Ordnance Industry Society and the Nuclear Society, the Chemical Industry Society was also established by Mr. Baixi against all opinions, right?

Mr. Wu: You are right.  Mr. Baixi had a few conversations with us and said that we can directly use advanced scientific theories from Europe and the United States; but in the industrial field, we have to rely on ourselves.  The same is true for chemistry. We must invest a lot of manpower and material resources to build our own chemical industry in order to get rid of the shackles of foreign powers on us.

Reporter: So you transferred to the Society of Chemical Engineering?

Mr. Wu: When Mr. Baixi talked about chemical industry, he was afraid that all of us would not understand, so he gave examples of our daily clothing, food, shelter and behavior.  The first thing to talk about is clothes.  He said that the clothes we wear now are all made of natural fur and fibers. Can we use chemical technology to create synthetic fibers from simple raw materials to make clothes cheap and beautiful?  My hometown is in Jiading, Jiangsu Province. When I was a child, I saw people around me raising silkworms, which was very hard work. As a result, the cocoons produced and the silks and satins spun could not be worn by the poor, and I felt quite aggrieved.  After listening to Mr. Sun's words, I decided to participate in the establishment of the Chemical Industry Society and devote myself to the field of chemical fiber.  This will last for eighty years.

Reporter: After decades of hard work, Mr. Wu finally realized Mr. Baixi¡¯s dream. It¡¯s a great achievement!  By the way, how did you feel when you first met Mr. Baixi?

Mr. Wu: Before that, I had seen Mr. Baixi¡¯s photos in newspapers and magazines, but they were blurry. I just thought he was a very young and handsome man.  After meeting him, I discovered that he was not only young and handsome, but also gentle, approachable and approachable. He was the most approachable person I have ever seen in my life.

Reporter: Yes, Mr. Baixi is the first of the four most beautiful men in the Republic of China!

Mr. Wu: Hey, how can the other people compare with Mr. Baixi?  In addition to his extraordinary appearance, Mr. Baixi is also the first person in the past century in terms of morality, academics, and merit.  In my opinion, none of the other people are worthy of carrying Mr. Baixi's shoes, so how can they be called together?  Besides, Mr. Baixi doesn¡¯t rely on his appearance to become famous!

Reporter: Hehe, this then on the morning of Christmas 1907, the China Science and Technology Society held its first general meeting?

Mr. Wu: This conference is of great significance, because in view of the poor situation of Chinese science, Mr. Baixi put forward the slogan of leading disciplines through projects for the first time in his speech at the conference, requiring that each society must focus on one or several projects that are related to the national economy and people's livelihood.  research and use this opportunity to train new people.  In the next two or three days, Mr. Baixi visited almost all societies and discussed with everyone the projects that should be studied.  It can be said that without the drive of these projects, the development of science in China would never be as prosperous as it is today!

    Reporter: For example?

Mr. Wu: For example, the engine project of the Machinery Industry Association, the Civilian III heavy machine gun project of the Ordnance Industry Association, and the chain reaction project of the Nuclear Society.

Reporter: In the subsequent group meeting, did you serve as the executive director of the Chemical Society?

Mr. Wu: At that time, "there were no good generals in Sichuan, and Liao Hua was the vanguard." Even a middle-class person like me could be the executive director.

Reporter: Mr. Wu, you are too modest!  It is said that in the final election of the China Science and Technology Society, Mr. Baixi was unanimously elected as the first president of the society?

Mr. Wu: There were 204 people attending the meeting, 203 votes were cast for Mr. Baixi, and 1 abstained.  Because Mr. Baixi has a high academic status and enjoys a huge reputation at home and abroad, it can be said that he is the only candidate who is publicly recommended as the president of the society.  Mr. Baixi felt that he should avoid suspicion, so he abstained from voting.  Therefore, the most objective statement should be that everyone voted in favor except Mr. Baixi himself.  (To be continued.
