Chapter 2001 Battle of Luoshui (2)

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

Li Yuan's breakout was part of Zhang Wenyuan's plan, but Zhang Wenyuan never expected that Li Yuan would be so prepared to break out.

Early in the morning, Zhang Wenyuan received a report from the scouts, and the Tang army came out of the west gate to break out.

Zhang Wenyuan was overjoyed that this old guy Li Yuan was finally willing to move.

So Zhang Wenyuan immediately ordered the three armies to go into battle, and according to the plan, he and Liu Yunfang attacked the Tang army crossing the river from the north and south sides.

The two armies, tens of thousands of men and horses, all with cavalry in front and infantry behind, went straight towards the Tang army.

The Sui army camp was quite far away from Tongzhou City, so when the Sui army rushed to the battlefield, they found that the Tang army had already begun to cross the river.

Zhang Wenyuan immediately deployed his troops and launched an attack on the Tang army.

On the right side of the garrison, Yang Yiyan led the cavalry as the vanguard, and Zhang Wenyuan led the troops behind.  On the side of the Huwei Guard, Wang Junkuo led the cavalry as the vanguard, and Liu Yunfang led the troops behind.

Of course, Zhang Wenyuan did not ignore Tongzhou City.

The two armies, led by Xin Wenli and Gao Yuanzhen respectively, tentatively launched an attack on Tongzhou City.

If all the Tang troops in the city retreat, they will take advantage of the situation to break through the city and block the Tang troops' last retreat.  If the Tang army had its main force in the city, it could also guard against the Tang army in the city and take advantage of the chaos to launch a surprise attack on the Sui army.

When Zhang Wenyuan led his army to the battlefield, he saw that the Tang army had formed a formation facing south. In front of the formation, there were many horses and carts, which they thought were obstacles.  Spearmen were placed in front of the formation, crossbowmen were placed in the rear, and there were cavalry on both sides of the formation.  After this formation, there is another formation facing north on the back, which is at odds with each other.

I have to say that the formation is good, but the soldiers are hard to say.

And between the two formations, there is an empty road, which runs from the west gate of Tongzhou City to the bank of Luoshui River.

On the bank of Luoshui River, the Tang army had set up temporary positions and crossed the river in sequence.  However, the Luoshui River was about a thousand paces wide, and the Tang army did not have large ships, so it was not easy to cross the river.

Zhang Wenyuan understood that the Tang army was stalling for time by preparing to block the attack with chariot formations and strong bows and crossbows. Li Yuan was prepared to cross as many rivers as he could.

Therefore, for the current plan, we must make a quick decision.

The drums beat, the flags flutter,

Yang Yiyan clenched his long spear and launched an attack on the Tang army on the opposite side.

The arrow troops of the Sui cavalry were all assault cavalry.  Each of these cavalrymen wore iron armor and held a spear, and the horses beneath them were also covered in leather armor or cloth armor to resist arrows.

Horses are better equipped than humans, which shows how elite the Sui army's cavalry was.

These people let go and attacked forward, like a dragon coming out of the sea or a black tiger coming out of the mountain. They were as powerful as thunder and were simply unstoppable.

The Tang Army on the opposite side were all new troops. Although they had undergone some simple training, they had little combat experience and no psychological preparation for a tough battle.

So facing the trembling of the earth and the neighing of the war horses, everyone was trembling with fear.

Although the Tang army was armed with bows and arrows, many of them were timid when facing the Sui army. They had already shot their arrows before the Sui army entered the shooting range.

People follow the herd, so the archers in the front row follow suit and shoot their bows and arrows together.  All the bows and arrows were sparse, as if they were missing something.

But the Sui army was not within shooting range at all, and this round of bows and arrows caused no casualties at all.

The veterans in the Tang Army's formation had begun to curse.

Although it is an army of new recruits, its generals, including middle and lower-level officers, are all drawn from veterans.  If not, this group of recruits would have fled immediately upon seeing this formation.

The veterans cursed loudly, but there were too many new recruits, which was of no use at all. Instead, it caused chaos.

In the blink of an eye, the Sui army had already reached the front of the formation.

Under normal circumstances, the enemy cavalry starts shooting seventy or eighty steps away. At this distance, when the enemy cavalry approaches, veterans can generally shoot two to three arrows.

But this group of new soldiers were in a mess when they shot the first arrow. How could they have time to shoot the second arrow?

When the Sui cavalry rushed to the front of the formation, they were blocked by horseback and carts.  In fact, the blocking ability of these carts and horses is stronger than that of a bunch of new recruits.

Li Yuan also knew this and prepared countless carts and horses for the Sui army.

The cavalry of the Sui army galloped at high speed. In order to charge, even these carts and horses could not avoid it, and they rushed forward.

Soon the war horses and the cart collided.

The huge impact almost caused both parties to fly out.  The chest bones of the war horse were shattered and it fell to the ground. The cart in front of it was also scattered by the impact.

The Sui army cavalry moved forward one after another without any hesitation. There was a pause and hesitation, and soon, the car formation set up by Li Yuan was torn open by the Sui army's cavalry.

A large number of soldiers rushed in along the torn hole, and the scene was spectacular.

Yang Yiyan has always liked to take the lead. As the arrowhead of the army, he led a large cavalry force into the Tang army and advanced.

The originally loose formation also began to become tighter.

Everyone leveled their spears and began to march into the formation.

Although he fought countless battles, Yang Yiyan did not underestimate the Tang army.  The Tang army knew very well the consequences of the formation being broken, and would definitely fight to the death.

The Sui army rushed very fast, and Yang Yiyan could even look at the frightened look on the face of the Tang army on the opposite side.

    "Boom"

The Sui army crashed into the Tang army's infantry formation.

It was beyond Yang Yiyan¡¯s expectation.  The Tang army on the opposite side did not have that strong sense of resistance.  He has been fighting for so many years, and he can tell at a glance whether the other party is truly resisting.

This group of Tang soldiers were frightened, fearful, and eager to avoid fighting, but they did not have the courage to resist.

Soon, the first group of Sui army cavalry overturned the Tang army in front of them.

What they faced were not swords and guns at all, but a series of exclamations.

The Sui army's cavalry continued to advance, as simple as tearing apart a foot of cloth. The Tang army's formation was torn apart layer by layer.

The Sui army broke into the Tang army's formation without any effort and smashed it into pieces.

Even Yang Yiyan in the formation was shocked. The Tang army on the opposite side was not the Tang army he was familiar with.  If all the Tang troops were like this, Li Yuan would be crazy to think about fighting for the world.

Yang Yiyan didn¡¯t know that these were the recruits left by Li Yuan, but they were just used to fill up the numbers.

Of course, Yang Yiyan would not care about this. The most important thing was to break through the Tang army's obstruction as soon as possible, rush to the river, and prevent the Tang army from crossing the river.

The Sui army was crushing them all the way, and the new recruits of the Tang army were on the verge of collapse.

Some of the old, weak, sick and disabled people in the back have already begun to flee in all directions.

Li Yuan was dazzled by what he saw from his position by the river.  He did not expect that this group of new soldiers was so useless. If this continued, the main force would not be able to cross the river, and the Sui army would reach the river.

    Who will save me!

At this moment, Wang Huang, who had been observing the situation in Tongzhou City, also discovered the critical situation on the battlefield. Although his mission was to guard Tongzhou City and contain the Sui army, Wang Huang was not a stubborn person.  To buy time for Li Yuan, he had to take the initiative to attack the Sui army.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
