Naturally, the actions of the Japanese army cannot be concealed from the national army. Not to mention that such a large-scale troop mobilization itself is quite a stir. The intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities of the National Government's Military Command Bureau are not just blown away.

As early as late April, the Chinese army had detected the Japanese army's combat plan and made preparations for it. It mobilized additional troops to the Zhejiang and Gansu areas. At the same time, it established a main defense zone in the deep areas of the Zhejiang and Gansu lines to close in.  The troops strengthened key frontal defenses, disrupted traffic, and transformed the terrain.

The Military Commission first ordered some of the troops east of Poyang Lake along the southern bank of the Yangtze River at Zhangtiandu, Yongfeng, Shengxian, and Ninghai to step up the construction of fortifications, destroy roads that the enemy might use, and add underwater obstacles.

Some areas have gathered troops and are preparing to organize key defenses in the Jinhua and Lanxi areas.

At the same time, Ding Zhipan¡¯s 26th Army and Wang Yaowu¡¯s 74th Army, the main forces of the 3rd theater, were deployed near Quzhou in the eastern section of Zhejiang-Gan Road, and Shi Zhongcheng¡¯s 100th Army was deployed near Yiyang in the western section of Zhejiang-Gan Road.

He also ordered Xue Yue's 9th War Zone to prepare to send three armies to the eastern Jiangxi area to support the 3rd War Zone.

At this time, everyone knows that the focus of this battle is in the Zhejiang and Jiangxi regions, and naturally the third theater will play the leading role. Therefore, the Military Commission strictly ordered the third theater to actively prepare for the war.

??The third theater did not dare to neglect, formulated a counterattack plan, and formulated a combat policy based on the strength and situation of both sides, which was to deploy the minimum force in the western sections of Zhejiang and Ganxi roads to carry out lasting resistance.

Then concentrate the main force on the eastern section of the Zhejiang and Ganxi roads, use the established positions to resist for a long time, and try their best to harass the enemy's rear, delay and contain the enemy, especially in Jinhua and Lanxi, build strong positions in advance to resist, and finally fight with the enemy near Quzhou  decisive battle.

To this end, the Third Theater Commander Command ordered the 25th Group Army to take charge of operations in southern Zhejiang, with the headquarters located in Jinyun.  The 10th Group Army is responsible for the deployment of operations on the south bank of the Qiantang River and the defense of Jinhua and Lanxi. Its headquarters is located in Jinhua.  The 32nd Group Army is responsible for operations on the north bank of the Qiantang River, with its headquarters in Chun'an.

The 100th Army is responsible for fighting in the western section of Zhejiang and Gansu Roads, and its headquarters is located in Yiyang.  The 26th Army and the 74th Army, which have the strongest combat effectiveness, were deployed in the Quzhou area.

The 23rd Group Army was also deployed to guard the front lines of Ningguo, Guichi, and Duchang, and conduct guerrilla warfare and mine laying to prevent enemy transportation in the Yangtze River.  Two more divisions must be detached and transferred to Shouchang and Yingtan in preparation for participating in the Zhejiang and Gansu battles. The general headquarters is located in Huizhou.

The 3rd theater will deploy the main four group armies in a fan shape and equidistantly on the front east of the Huizhou, Chun'an, Jinhua, and Jinyun lines, preparing to resist the attack of the enemy's 13th Army.

At the same time, one army was deployed in the western section of Zhejiang and Ganxi roads, and three armies were located in the Quzhou area.

The combat intention is: to start to resist step by step, gradually consume and exhaust the enemy, and then fight decisively with the enemy when they arrive near Quzhou.

On May 11, the Japanese 13th Army opened a command post in Hangzhou. With the exception of Kunio Ozue's mixed brigade, which did not arrive due to the long distance from Datong, all its troops entered the scheduled combat departure on May 13  land.

And according to the scheduled combat time, they launched attacks on May 15.

On the night of May 14, the 70th Division of Takayuki Uchida, located in Fenghua, first launched an attack westward against the temporary 35th Division of the 9th Army.

Then on the morning of May 15, the 22nd Division of Ojodo Sanzhi located in Shangyu and Dongguan launched an attack southward along the Cao'e River against the newly formed 30th Division and 32nd Division of the 88th Army facing them.

Since the two enemy divisions were pointing to the south of Sheng County, the defenders retreated southward after resistance. On the evening of the 17th, the enemy's 22nd Division arrived at Changle, southwest of Sheng County.

The Kono Yi mixed brigade located in Shaoxing launched an attack on the newly formed 21st Division of the 88th Army to the southwest on the evening of May 15, and arrived near the east of Zhuji via Fengqiao on the evening of the 17th.

The Sakai Naoji 15th Division located in Xiaoshan launched an attack on the troops of the 88th Army along the railway south on the night of May 15. When crossing the Puyang River, it encountered strong resistance and suffered heavy casualties. It arrived on the 17th  Near the northwest of Zhuji, the Heye Brigade formed a pincer-shaped attack on Zhuji.

Shunjiro Takeuchi's 116th Division, located in the northwest region of Fuyang, and Jiro Harada's mixed brigade launched an attack on the 192nd Division of the 28th Army on the morning of May 16th, and advanced to Shinto on the evening of the 17th. This division was one of the attacking forces.  The slowest.

The 32nd Division of Ide Tetsuzo located in the Fuyang area set off at 14:00 on May 17 and advanced along the rear of the 116th Division.

Beginning on May 15, the Japanese army launched an offensive on the front about 150 kilometers from Fenghua in the east to Fuyang in the west, using the tactics of multiple separate attacks and combined attacks to attack Quzhou.

At the same time, its air force directly supports the battlefield in attacking and bombing, and covers the advance of its ground troops.?, and conduct reconnaissance of troop movements and withdrawals in the 3rd theater.

On May 18, when the fighting was intense, Lieutenant General Tanabe, the deputy chief of staff of the Japanese Army, flew to Hangzhou from China to learn about the battle situation and instructed Sawada's 13th Army: After the end of this battle, the occupied area east of Jinhua must be secured, and  The materials you most hope to obtain in this battle are fluorite and railway equipment.

On this day, the 13th Army command post moved forward from Hangzhou to Zhuji, which was occupied by it that day. Zetian Shigeru needed to accompany Lieutenant General Tanabe in Hangzhou and report to him, so he did not move with the organization.

On the way, when its dedicated steamer went up the Qiantang River and turned left from Wenyan into the Yiqiao area of ??the Puyang River, it was sunk by a mine deployed by the 3rd War Zone, killing 11 officers and guards, and injuring many others.  , Sawada Shigeru was spared because he stayed in Hangzhou.

On May 19, the commander of the Chinese Expeditionary Forces, Shunroku Hata, flew to Hangzhou in the afternoon to understand the battle situation and inspect the battlefield.

First at the airport, he listened to the report of Rokuro Imanishi, commander of the 1st Flight Regiment, on the aerial reconnaissance and attack bombing of the battlefield. Then he went to the 13th Army Headquarters and listened to the commander of the 13th Army, Shigeru Sawada, and the chief of staff, Yasuo Tangkawa, on the operations of various units.  After the progress report, Shunroku Hata made two points in particular.

First, we must pay attention to military discipline and prevent any major incidents from happening again.

The second is to strengthen the "propaganda" work during the war and strive to create a peaceful atmosphere in order to win over those who surrender.

Tangchuan Yasuo reported that a large part of the Chinese troops retreated southward from Yiwu and Dongyang, escaping the roundabout encirclement of the 70th Division and the 22nd Division.

In this regard, Shunroku Hata believed that in this battle, the opportunity to encircle and annihilate the opponent's large corps had been lost.

On the morning of May 20, Shunroku Hata and Shigeru Sawada took a transport plane and flew to Tonglu, Yiwu, Dongyang and other places, inspected the battlefield, and returned to Nanjing in the afternoon.

On the same day, Xiao Xiujiang Bangxiong's mixed brigade arrived in Hangzhou from Datong, Shanxi, and headed for Zhuji.

The enemy's 116th Division attacking along the Fuchun River crossed the Xin'an River and approached Lanxi and Jinhua.  The enemy's 22nd Division, which rounded off from the southeast, occupied the road from Wuyi to Jinhua, and formed a roundabout situation with the 116th Division towards Jinhua and Lanxi.

The 79th Division of Wang Jingjiu¡¯s 10th Group Army defended Jinhua, and the 63rd Division defended Lanxi.  In addition to building fortifications in mountains and hills, these troops also set up multiple minefields on their fronts and peripheries.

The 70th Division attacking Jinhua was just reorganized from the 20th Independent Mixed Brigade. Jinhua is located on the north bank of the Dongyang River and is the intersection of the Sancha Railway. When the enemy's 70th Division approached the city from Jiangbei, it was defended.  The 79th Division of the Army launched a powerful counterattack and later entered the minefield, causing continuous casualties.

Starting from the evening of May 25, the 79th Division fought fiercely with the 61st Brigade inside and outside the city for three days and three nights, causing great damage to the Japanese army.

But the Japanese 32nd Division on the North Road has reached Hangtou and Zhitang in the southwest of Shouchang, the 116th Division has reached Tangcun and Zhuge in the southeast of Shouchang; the 22nd Division on the South Road has reached Longyou.  Jinhua's front, two wings and rear were all detoured.

In order to avoid being surrounded by the enemy, the 79th Division was ordered to evacuate together with the Lanxi garrison before dawn on the 28th. The Japanese army immediately entered the city from the northeast and northwest corners of Jinhua City. At 6:30 on May 28, Jinhua City was surrounded by 70 enemy troops.  The 61st Brigade of the Division invaded.

After that, the 70th Division stopped advancing and was dedicated to guarding Jinhua, Lanxi and Zhuji along the railway, and fighting against the dispersed Chinese troops remaining in the area.

The 63rd Division defending Lanxi cooperated with the 21st Division in the northeast of the city to resist the attack launched by the enemy's 15th Division.

The 15th Division used concentrated troops and firepower to launch a strong attack, but was repulsed by the defenders.  At 10:45 on the 28th, Lieutenant General Sakai Naotsugu, commander of the enemy's 15th Division, was observing the situation at a three-way intersection 3 miles north of Lanxi City when he entered the minefield of the 63rd Division. There was a sudden loud noise and Sakai's horse  He was killed immediately. Sakai was seriously injured and died immediately.

The 63rd Division mined a large area outside Lanxi City. It not only killed the enemy division commander Naoji Sakai, but also injured the division's weapons minister Miyashita, veterinarian minister Sano, and veterinarian member Sayama and many others.

After the 63rd Division and the 21st Division held firm in Lanxi for 3 days and 3 nights, because the enemy had circled back to their rear, they were ordered to withdraw from Lanxi City on May 28 and conduct guerrilla activities behind enemy lines in nearby mountains. On that day, the 15th Division  Captured Lanxi.

Less than a week after the battle began, the Chinese army lost many important towns such as Jinhua and Lanxi. Although the pre-war plan was to block attacks step by step, the speed and intensity of the Japanese attack did exceed the expectations of the Third Theater.  .

In addition, the troops on the front line were deeply insufficient, so the Military Commission immediately decided to let the national troops in southern Shandong, northern Jiangsu and central Anhui attack southward to threaten the Japanese troops on the north bank of the Yangtze River.

At the same time, the First and Second War Zones and the Hebei-Cha War Zone in southern Hebei also received similar combat orders. The Military Commission required the national troops in these areas to take action to launch attacks on the Japanese and puppet troops in their respective defense zones and provide side support.  Combat in the Zhejiang and Jiangxi regions.

Under this circumstance, Li Guoyao, who was in Sumushan, received a telegram order for a meeting in the Hebei-Cha war zone!

After reading the telegram from the Hebei-Cha War Zone, Li Guoyao sighed and said to Ma Desheng beside him: "The good days are over!"
