From March to May, the Northeast battlefield remained calm in a strange state.

For the entire two months, the Soviet Red Army continued to conduct military exercises in the border areas, first on the eastern front, and then on the Sino-Mongolian border, without stopping for a moment.

The various strange actions of the Soviet Red Army also made the Kwantung Army headquarters very nervous. A large number of troops gathered in the border areas, so they could only temporarily abandon the counterattack plan against Li Guoyao's troops.

Li Guoyao's side is also very busy because the army has just been reorganized, personnel adjustments and troop defense adjustments, etc.

In addition, five of the six reorganized divisions were not full, and their weapons and equipment were relatively insufficient. Therefore, during this period, all units of the Northeast Advance Army were busy replenishing soldiers and equipment, and did not launch a larger-scale attack on the Kwantung Army.

For a moment, both sides became silent for a rare moment!

The battle situation outside the pass has calmed down, but the situation inside the pass is turbulent. The Japanese army's long-planned operation to open up the mainland's communication lines has begun!

As early as February 1943, after the Japanese army was forced to retreat from Guadalcanal Island in the South Pacific, the war situation successively showed an extremely unfavorable state for the Japanese army.

At this time, Major General Joichiro Sanada, Chief of Operations of the Japanese Army General Staff Headquarters, and Colonel Takushiro Hattori, Chief of Operations Section, predicted that after the U.S. military continues to develop its offensive in the Pacific, maritime traffic from Southeast Asia to Japan will be blocked.

Therefore, opening up mainland transportation lines and making land railway and road transportation from Malaya, Thailand, and Vietnam via China to Busan in North Korea have become an important link for long-term persistence on land.

The original purpose of this battle was to open up and ensure the mainland's communication lines, so as to facilitate long-term defense in the East Asian continent.

The Japanese military¡¯s combat plan nominally has a single purpose, which is to destroy the air force bases in southwest China, but in fact it is more than that.

These high-level command organs of the Japanese army in China consider that the combat situation in the Pacific region continues to deteriorate, and Japanese troops in China will continue to be transferred from abroad. The Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army in the occupied areas are growing and growing, which has seriously threatened the survival of the Japanese army, and the Kuomintang army is in the process of  Continuously receiving assistance from the United States, its strength has skyrocketed.

However, due to different interests and inherent contradictions between the two parties, frictions between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party continue to occur!

Accordingly, the Japanese army believes that it should take advantage of the fact that some divisions have not yet been transferred out of mainland China and the relationship between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party is at a tense moment to carry out annihilating attacks on the main force of China in order to eliminate the possible danger that the dispatched troops will suffer when the strength of the dispatched troops is reduced in the future.  threaten.

"This is to prevent the US military from being strategically attacked from the east and west when landing at the Pearl River Estuary, Yangtze River Delta, Haizhou Bay, and Shandong Peninsula along China's coast.

In addition, this battle can also destroy the air force bases in southwest China used to attack Japanese soil, and use the air bases in the captured areas to cover maritime traffic in the South China Sea.  Obtain special resources in areas along transportation routes, especially tungsten ore and lead mines in Hunan and Jiangxi provinces.

There is also the ability to strengthen the confidence of the Japanese people to fight to the end, so this plan has received the attention of the base camp and the Chinese dispatched troops.

On January 24, 1944, the Japanese base camp dispatched troops to China and issued the "Operation No. 1" order, namely:

    (1) The purpose of the operation is to destroy the main air force base in southwest China;

    (2) The attack and occupation of the southern section of the Hunan-Guangxi, Guangdong-Han and Ping-Han railways and important places along them shall be organized and implemented by the Commander-in-Chief of the Chinese Expeditionary Forces.

    (3) The Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Army will assist the Chinese dispatched troops in this operation;

    (4) Specific matters related to this operation shall be directed by the Chief of Staff.

According to this order, the Japanese Army General Staff Headquarters, in the name of the instructions of the Chief of Staff, issued the following "Operation Outline No. 1" to the Chinese dispatched troops.

The General Staff Headquarters divided the entire plan into two phases. The first phase started in North China in the late spring of Showa 19, and in Wuhan and Guangdong in the summer.  Defeat the Central Army, first occupy the southern Ping-Han Railway south of the Yellow River, and secondly occupy and secure the Hunan-Guangxi and Guangdong-Han Railways and important places along them.  During the operation, according to the conditions of the Ping-Han and Guangdong-Han railways, they should be repaired in time.

In order to cope with China's dispatch of troops, the Southern Army should launch local offensives against Myanmar and India.

It is planned that in April of the 19th year of Showa, the North China Front Army will start operations from North China, defeat the main force of the 1st Theater Army, occupy and secure the Ping-Han Railway south of the Yellow River and the areas along it. The operation time is scheduled to be about one and a half months.

The forces to be used in combat are scheduled to be four divisions of the 12th Army of the North China Front and the first unit of the 5th Air Force.

The second phase was the Hunan-Guangxi operation, which was planned in June of the 19th year of Showa. The 11th Army started from the Wuhan area, and the 23rd Army started operations in the Guangdong area in July and August.  The main purpose is to defeat the main forces of the 9th and 6th theaters of the Central Army, capture the vicinity of Guilin and Liuzhou, and then mop up and occupy the remaining enemy forces in the areas along the Hunan-Guangxi and Guangdong-Han railways. The scheduled combat time is about 5 months.

The forces to be used in combat are scheduled to be 7 to 8 divisions of the 11th Army, one to two divisions directly under the Chinese Expeditionary Force, and two flight regiments of the 5th Air Force.

At the same time, when China dispatches troops for operations, the Southern Army must immediately respond to the operation. First, it is determined that a part of the Southern Army will launch an attack in the Nujiang area of ????Yunnan for containment.

Secondly, during the climax of aviation operations, China dispatched troops to the Southern Army's 3rd Air Force, which must coordinate closely with them.

On January 25, Lieutenant General Matsui Tairo, Chief of General Staff of China Expeditionary Forces, and Staff Officer Masaichi Amano returned to Japan from Nanjing and went to the General Staff Headquarters to receive the combat mission and related instructions.

After returning to Nanjing, a chiefs of staff meeting was held on February 3rd and 4th to convey the combat order. Participants included Lieutenant General Oshiroto Sanji, Chief of Staff of the North China Front, and Major General Tadao Teragaki, Chief of Staff of the 12th Army.  Senior Staff Officer of the 11th Army, Colonel Takei Seitaro, Chief of Staff of the 13th Army, Major General Sasano Shinosuke, Chief of Staff of the 23rd Army, Major General Yosuke Adachi, Chief of Staff of the 3rd Flying Regiment, Colonel Yoshii Takara, and Navy Chinese Fleet Staff Officer, Navy Colonel Matsushima  Qing San was present.

After this meeting, the Japanese troops in China began to prepare for "Operation No. 1".

On March 31, the Japanese base camp issued an order for the battle order of the 12th Army. Its troops were organized into:

The North China Front attached great importance to the firepower of the ground forces in this battle. In addition to the air force and tank units, it also concentrated 35 artillery squadrons.

On the night of April 17, the 12th Army launched an attack from Zhongmou County in Henan Province with 5 divisions and 3 brigades. On the 19th, they captured Zhengzhou and Guodian in Xinzheng County. On the 21st, they occupied Xinzheng.  They captured Xuchang on the 1st, Yu County west of Xuchang on May 3rd, and Yancheng on May 5th.

Then the enemy's 27th Division continued to advance southward from Yancheng on May 7, and met up with the 11th Independent Infantry Brigade of the 11th Army's northward attack in Queshan on the morning of May 9th.

From then on, starting from the Yellow River Iron Bridge in the north and ending at Changtaiguan in the north of Xinyang in the south, the approximately 210 kilometers of railway and the areas on both sides were occupied by the enemy's 12th Army and 11th Army within 23 days.

Subsequently, the North China Front Army immediately transferred its forces to the mountainous areas of Xiangcheng, Jiaxian, Yuxian, Mixian, Dengfeng, and Linru west of the southern section of Pinghan Road, looking for the 31st Group Army, the main force of the 1st theater, for a decisive battle.

In order to achieve the purpose of this operation, the 12th Army also sent part of its 37th Division to Ruyang and Songxian in the Funiu Mountains in an advancing operation, and captured Lushi on May 20;  The 62nd Division and part of the 3rd Chariot Division went west from the Yihe River, along the Luohe River to Yiyang, passing through Shapotou, Zhuyuangou, Jueshan, Luoning, Shifangyuan, and Changshui Town.  , Dongsiji, Guxian, and joined forces with the 37th Division in Liucun and Fanli Town in the northeast of Lushi on May 21.
