Chapter 1688 Poverty and Desperation

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

Leta City, a capital city that was originally quite large, is now in the midst of a fierce battle.  Since two days ago, it has been under shelling from the Anmor rebels.  "Boom!!!" Another explosion sounded without warning.  Splattered concrete fragments and powder of bricks and soil fell from the air and spread everywhere.

The locals huddled like rats in the gaps between air raid shelters and bombed-out buildings, building a kind of shack out of bricks, wood, cardboard and metal sheets picked up from the ruins.  Occasional groans and cries among the ruins are signs of people's overcrowded dwellings.

The dilapidated hospital was filled with wounded soldiers who were screaming for lack of painkillers, some who were blind for two days, some with broken arms and legs, some with bruises all over their bodies burned by gasoline bombs, their faces were hideous, and their flesh and blood were blurred.  They were the victims of the last battle.  But for now, they're the lucky ones.  At least they made it back to the hospital from the line of fire alive.

From the southeast of Anmor to the city closer to the west, the bodies of the fallen lie everywhere in trenches, under rubble, in the grass and in the desert.  Some have just died, while others are rotting and smelly.  Among them, some people have no graves, no tombstones, or even a simple mark.  No one knows their names, where they come from, or who will shed tears and blood for them.  Because they are all mercenaries.

After surviving the shelling, Peng Lefeng struggled to get out of the bunker.  Taking a few brothers with them onto the street, they could finally breathe a sigh of relief.  Peng Lefeng hesitated again and again, but took out the only cigarette from the crumpled cigarette box and held it in the corner of his mouth.

"Come on, Lao Peng, you don't want to smoke it." A mercenary said with a smile, "You have had that cigarette in your arms for almost a week."

Peng Lefeng glanced at him, lit the cigarette with a lighter, and mocked, "I still have to smoke it. Because I found you staring at it for almost a week. If I die one day, maybe you will  The first thing to do is to take this cigarette from me."

"How can you miss me so much?" The mercenary sighed, "I thought we were brothers." But he changed the topic, "Since we are brothers, it is natural for me to inherit your inheritance."

"Damn you! Get out of here!" Peng Lefeng grabbed the cigarette in his mouth and threw it at him.

The mercenary caught half of the cigarette with both hands, took a puff, and returned it to him, "This is a brother, but Lao Peng, do you think we can survive it?"

Peng Lefeng shook his head with a cigarette in his mouth and said, "I don't know. I don't want to know either!"

The city was besieged and supplies were insufficient, so even food was rationed.  There were some black women on the street, waiting in a long line to receive their rations.  The child was so thin that he was just skin and bones, and there was absolutely no cuteness about him.  The amount of food calories each person gets per day is less than half of what it was before the war, and even this amount of food is decreasing, and sometimes it is not available at all.

Medicine is now more scarce than food.  Hunger and disease knocked people to the ground like bullets, and infectious diseases swooped from one ruin to another like locusts.  Most of the children are sick and most are malnourished.  Infant and child mortality reached its highest point during the war.

The world has simply become a huge Pandora's box. If there is any hope in it, it is that we hope that the night will come soon.  The dark night can hide all this, and you can travel to the situation before the war for a few hours of sleep.  Therefore, those who still have to wake up the next morning cannot but envy those who have fallen asleep forever.

Not far away, a riot broke out in the convoy distributing supplies, and someone tried to rob the supplies.  Anmol government troops opened fire to suppress the situation, at the cost of the death of three civilians.  Peng Lefeng and a few mercenaries stood there and watched, like the most indifferent spectators in the world.

A young black father held a child and knelt at Peng Lefeng's feet, saying that the child was hungry and fainting, and begging them to give him some food.  Because now only they, the foreign mercenaries, have supplies, they even have cans, and they even smoke.

A mercenary hesitated for a moment, took out a can and was about to throw it to the man, but was stopped by Peng Lefeng.  He looked at the black man, pulled out the pistol from his waist and pointed it at him, "Yesterday you came here with a child, and today you brought another one. This child is not yours, but you picked it up on the road. He  It's not that he's fainted from hunger, but that he's dead. Now get out of my sight, or I'll give you a bullet."

The black man ran away in a panic. Peng Lefeng felt as if his stomach was filled with disgusting things, making him want to vomit.  Did war make human nature so despicable, or is human nature inherently despicable?  He didn't know, he just felt that he should smoke this last cigarette without any regrets.

Suddenly several mercenaries ran over, "Boss, our plane passed by and dropped supplies."

"What? Where is it?!" Peng Lefeng suddenly grabbed him and said, "Where is it?"

"A few brothers have already gone over there on the street. We have to go quickly, otherwise the things will be robbed by those civilians." The mercenary yelled.

"Then what are you waiting for? Go over and grab it!" Peng Lefeng jumped up and shouted with red eyes.  "Shoot and tell them who will rob and kill whom!"

Under siege, whether it is food, medicine or ammunition, they are what they urgently need and what they rely on to survive.  Peng Lefeng and some mercenaries rushed over with shouts.  But they were still a step too late. When they arrived, the place was already surrounded by government troops.

"Get out of the way, get out of my way. This thing belongs to us!" Peng Lefeng and a group of mercenaries pushed away the government troops fiercely, separated from the crowd and walked over.

But I found that the scene was surprisingly calm. The government troops were surrounding them, but no one tried to grab anything.

There was a man sitting on top of a pile of supplies, and he was wearing a parachute buckle.  But another man held a government army captain in his hand and pressed his gun against the captain's chin.

The man sitting on the pile of items was Lin Rui, and the man holding the government army captain was Jiang An.

Seeing Peng Lefeng and other mercenaries coming, Lin Rui jumped down from the stack of supplies.  "Okay, Actuary, let go of this captain and let him take his people out. Our people are here."

Peng Lefeng handed the gun in his hand to the mercenary beside him and ran over to hug Lin Rui.  "Lin Rui, hahahaha!! I didn't expect it was really you!?" Peng Lefeng hugged Lin Rui and laughed.  "Isn't this a dream? It's you, why are you here?!"
